Traditionally Black Friday is an event that celebrates consumer culture and the essence of our now commercialized holiday. Typically, retailers hold sales to stimulate the spending of money and to get their product to move. I normally don’t partake in the post-holiday festivities.

However, this year the stores on La brea were doing something atypical, namely, Stussy, Union and Undefeated. A canned food drive was done, in which Undefeated X Chuck Taylors were given in exchange for the canned goods. Free tamales, Pomegrante juice and energy drinks were also served. Finally, to top it off were treated to a life performances by Jrocc( Beatjunkies), Nosaj Thing, Flying Lotus, and a well-recovered DJ AM.

JRocc started of the day with some jaw dropping Brazil heat and exclusive 45s, which set the mood for things to come. His sound stylings were representative of his travels to South America part of the Brasilintime documentary. Jason aka Nosaj Thing( which is Jason backwards), awed the crowd with his electronic, acid-filled eerie set. Everyone was also feeling the dub influenced, neo soul poppin sound of Flying Lotus, who definitely kept me stimulated. Overall, you really can’t beat a day filled with free food, good music, live performances by some of LA’s best.
