The Civil Fam got the opportunity to ask model Joli Robinson a few questions. You may have seen her in Estevan Oriol’s famous pictures or probably already knew about her. But I’m almost positive you didn’t know this much about her..

CIVIL: Joli Robinson.. How are you doing today..?

 Joli: Doing great-spring is here, you can breath fresh air in the city once again.
 
CIVIL: So what nationality are you?

Joli: I’m a hapa mix – mother is from Hong Kong and father is a mix of a couple euro nationalities.
 
CIVIL: How did you get into modeling?

Joli: My mom modeled for a bit when she was young n lived in Europe. She used to make me and my brother pose all the time as little kids. I hated it. I grew up a real tom boy, but did a real small gig with a department as a teen, and started doing it here and there for fun, and eventually used it as a way to get past being shy. It was always more for fun and getting to travel more than anything.

 
CIVIL: How was it like working with Estevan?

Joli: Estevan is great. I had a lot of his published work I tore out to use as visual reference and inspiration for my own art. After shooting with another photographer in L.A., Este saw pics and wanted to shoot. I pretty much said hell yeah. He’s a no bullshit kind of guy. Plus who the hell else is shooting bw portraits like him? He’s real dedicated and loyal to his art, and he’s got a great heart. He’s true to himself and the culture he loves. Plus, he looks like he could rip an organ outta you with his bare hands.

 CIVIL: A little food for thought…What do you look for in a guy?

Joli: Haha, oh Lord. Inquiring minds really want to know? I look for a guy who is successful doing his own thing. It says a lot about a person. I’ve never been able to stomach a 9-5 corporate job. I’ve tried but its severely against my nature. I have issues with unquestioned authority. I like when people can integrate and make rules for themselves. Freedom is a priority. And I need a guy who’s smart, responsible and just self aware. Dude has gotta be able to go toe to toe with me. I’m more about integrity than I am about what car a guy is driving. I get real bored with people who get rich JUST to try and impress people they don’t even know.
 
CIVIL: What are some key turn offs?

Joli: Haha! Chasing the “american dream” JUST because you can’t think for yourself. Get the money, but damn, that’s not even the tip of the iceberg. I hate when people get to the “top” and act miserable and don’t think twice about how they created every bit of it. You played yourself, if that happens. Also, smoking. NASTY, son. I can’t even hang with friends when they smoke.

CIVIL: Turn ons?

Joli: Intelligence and a bit of swagger. Although I think the wisest people have the best senses of humor, and can roll with any type of situation. If a guy can literally keep his cool no matter what comes, that is sexxxxxxy. Nowadays, men act more like little girls than women do. Why is it necessary to look prettier than me? Or throw temper tantrums? I like men who are natural born leaders, guys who can trouble shoot and don’t lose touch of what’s really important. Let a girl know if you find any!
 

CIVIL: Which place do you like better…Los Angeles..Or…Ney York…and why?

Joli: Ahaha! NY’s weather is the effing worst. The subways are convenient but holy hell, being underground everyday makes you wanna kill someone, and to be honest the NY hustle mentality is over-rated. Everyone’s got stock piles of undercover rage and resentment here because of it. But damn, every culture shows it face here, the foods incredible, and everyone has access to EVERYTHING. Some really incredible, complex people live here. You learn A LOT about your strengths n talents because of the diversity and grittiness. LA’s got ocean you can actually swim in and palm trees for god’s sake. I feel like more people enjoy life in LA. But you all have your own brand of Hollywood la-la bs over there, and forget the traffic. I love em both.

Do you like interviews? Yes-ish.
Do you like art? YES.
Do you like graffiti? Hell yes.
Do you like others models? Hmmm… Haha! Some..times……………….
Do you date males models/zoolander?haha. Yes, once! BIG mistake. Dude ate 10 unsalted cashews for dinner, and was in loooooove with himself.
Have you ever been skinny dipping? Yes. I highly recommend it.
Have you ever stolen? a few hearts maybe.
Have you ever passed out at a bar? No. But, in a hotel lobby, yes. Classy!!
Have you ever had a one night stand? No.
Do you love CIVIL?haha.. Yessuh
 
CIVIL: So do you have any projects in the future we should be looking out for?

Joli: Yes! Going to finally work to get my ass in gear and get an art show together. I’d even love to come out west again soon and collabo more with some photographers n artists, especially Este, Mac and Retna. What girl wouldn’t love her mug painted on a wall courtesy of some sick artists?
