Civil Catches up with Lock’n Key of Beat Freaks

Fresh of their strong performance on America’s Dance Crew, The Beat Freaks have been doing their thing and performing all over world. The Beat Freaks are unique as one of the all female, bgirl crews to enter a televised competition and kill it. CIVIL had a chance to gain the one of a kind perspective of Lock’n Key of the Beat Freaks and collect her thoughts on the show, performing, and what its like as a female in a male dominated competition.

CIVIL: How did you get started dancing?
Keeley:When I first saw streetdance in music videos I went crazy for it and did all I could to learn it. I moved to Los Angeles shortly after Highschool and started dancing professionally.

CIVIL:What inspires you to move they way you do?
Keeley: I love the rawness of streetdance styles. But on a deeper level it’s all spiritual.. I feel like a warrior in God’s army. Dance can change lives.

CIVIL: How does it feel to be reppin
hard for the females on a show like ABDC?
Keeley: I feel women have really been repped the wrong way in commercial hip hop. I feel so blessed to be in the Beat Freaks and to be a part of such a powerful group of women. Truth.

CIVIL: How is it like working with Lady Jules, and how have you
influenced each other?
Keeley She is awesome! We actually have a deeper bond, since we are both Christians and we counsel each other quite frequently.

CIVIL: What was it like behind the scenes of ABDC that wasn’t shown on the cameras?
Keeley: Not much, but we aren’t able to comment due to our contracts.

CIVIL: Were you impressed by the skill level of the
other crews on the show?
Keeley: The other crews were so amazing. I loved the diversity on the show.

CIVIL: What advice would you give to other female crews and dancers trying out for the show?
Keeley: I would say be prepared mentally and spiritually. Be true to who you are. It’s not easy. There are very long hours, and you always have to create within in the boundaries of the show’s music choices and challenges. We only had one day off the last 3 weeks of the show, dancing 14 hours a day.

CIVIL: Do you think that image of bgirls and bboys will change now in the public light that the top crews from ABDC have
been bboys/bgirls?
Keeley:Only in the mainstream. Bboying and bgirling hasn’t ever stopped. The underground scene has been going strong for years. I think for the average person it will definitely be more respected, which I’m very happy about.

CIVIL: Any crews from past season’s that you would like to battle and how would they go?
Keeley: Actually no, I’m only really familiar with Jabbawockeez and Super Crew. They are family so I wouldn’t battle them anyway. I’m not really into battling that much, since I used to all the time. Now I just want to dance. beat-bricks

In one word, how would you describe your dance style to the average joe?: Funky

Let’s play a game, I say a name and you say whatever comes to mind:
Lady Jules Strong
Beat Freaks Powerful
Super Cr3w Funny
Jabbawockez Unique
Quest crew Characters
Mario Lopez as AC Slater LOL
Puma’s or Nike? Nike
2Pac or Biggie? Biggie
CIVIL:Have you ever smoked a boy at a club that thought he was hard?
Keeley:Oh yeah!! That happened when I was like 12 years old at a teen club where I used to live!!

Much love and respect to Lock n Key and the Beat Freaks from the Civil Family.
