To say Typography is not an art is blasphemy, when looking at the work of Spanish Graphic designer Alex Trochut, one would feel feel a burning desire to repudiate that claim. Alex creates work that is both experimental and solid in execution. With superb draftsmanship he brings an array of concepts to life.

So I just got back from watching the movie “UP”! I am happy to say that I enjoyed a couple minutes of it. The movie starts out dramatic, but ends up being a normal funny kid movie…with the exception of adult jokes that fly over kids heads. My personal favorite thing about the movie was the guy who owned the army of dogs that talked. Some of the dogs that didnt play an important roll were the best. They looked like a mix between a rottweiler and a bulldog. Classic meat ball type..

How Dilla created A bangin beat from folk music

The critically acclaimed collaboration between J Dilla and Madlib took place when Champion Sound was released in 2004, known as Jaylib. The duo created this album by corresponding with beats and vocals while each of them were in their respective hometowns, Dilla(Detroit) and Madlib( Los Angeles). The contrast lies in the two differing production styles, while Dilla’s beats have a more subtle effect, Madlib’s would have a more grating, rough abrasive character highlighting their difference in styles.

Idealy, Dilla’s use of Cris Williamson’s “Shine on Straight Arrow” is nothing short of stellar. The way the man was able to use a sample of a completely different music, but flip the sample into his own work illustrates why Dilla was always several steps ahead of his peers. Many artists sample, but few reinvent to create their own signature in this world.

Its unfortunate that Dilla was praised and appreciated more for his work posthumously, than during his time on this Earth. Although of course there are the fans who knew all along, but better late than never.

Listen at 43 seconds.

    buff-black-men

Working out, physical fitness, and body building can be a strenuous, consistent activity throughout  a persons day. But if you don’t want to take the time to go alll the way to the gym, you can just walk to the nearest bus stop corner where all the brotha’s hang out and get a few dips in. I found this video a while back but havent  had the chance to post it up. I really don’t understand how these dudes are so damn buff!?

One guy looks like he eats children all day for protein and nutrients. The other guy is so ripped you can probably see his heart beat. The guy on the couch commentating on the work out is funny…he looks lazy as hell..not buff…sitting on the couch, not doing shit…bored. Anyway, Iwanted to see if anyone can do what this guy did in the video. He did a pull up in a very weird way…almost impossible to do….but hey…diz iz street work! Also, pay attention to the ginormous guy who picks up the metal trash can…he makes that thing look like he picked up a empty bag of chips. And another thing…what kid wants to go to his playground if all these dudes are there..!? Hellll no! Ripped ass dude with his shirt off doing pull ups on my monkey bars…Ginormous man going down the slide and getting stuck….man get off the monkey bars and my slide…I wanna play!

BO KNOWS: A 90s Retrospective

Posted in All, Culture, Sports on May 29th, 2009 by Bear

Another one of the genius Ad campaigns in the 90s were the “Bo Knows” commercials done for Nike. As an athlete that played a multitude of professional sports, both baseball and football, Jackson was the quintessential spokesperson for his expertise on footwear.

Jackson became a popular figure for his athleticism in multiple sports through the late 1980s and early 1990s. He endorsed Nike and was involved in a popular ad campaign called “Bo Knows” which envisioned Jackson attempting to take up a plethora of other sports, including tennis, golf, luge, auto racing, and even playing blues music with Bo Diddley, who scoffed at Jackson by telling him “You don’t know Diddley!” (In a later version of the spot, Jackson is shown playing the guitar expertly, after which an impressed Diddley says, “Bo…you do know Diddley, don’t you?”)

Another clip, envisioning Jackson playing ice hockey, was followed by Wayne Gretzky shaking his head in disbelief and dismissing the effort with a quick “No.” (In his autobiography, Gretzky says his negative rejoinder came in frustration after multiple takes of him saying “Bo knows hockey!” that the director didn’t like. He also said the bits showing Bo playing hockey were actually filmed on a wooden floor, with Jackson in stocking feet.) T shirts sold by Nike capitalizing on their successful ad campaign had a list of Jackson’s sports – both real and imagined – with hockey crossed out.

In a later spot, Jackson sees all the hoopla surrounding him and says, “I have rehab to do! I don’t have time for this!”, after which boxer George Foreman says, “But I do!” and steps in to finish the commercial, now re-dubbed “George Knows.”
