Interview with Indie184!!
Bombing, traveling, art galleries and parenting is something Indie184 is more than used too. Her recent exhibit, which was named “Queens Arrive” showcased herself and other artist such as Claw Money, Fafi, Abby.. and others. She is from a notorious all girl crew..which is know as Queens Destroy. From being a mommy to bombing train yards Indie takes us into the graff world from a female’s perspective…
Civil:Yooooo Indie!!…How’s it going?
Indie: Yo! Hey man, all is great! Just grinding everyday. Making things happen, so far the years been packed with action! And looking forward to many great things coming up this year! It’s all about staying focused.
Civil: So how exactly did you get into graffiti?
Indie: I’ve always had a love affair with graffiti. Growing up in ill hoods in NYC, graffiti has been part of the norm. But the most memorable piece was when I was living in the South Bronx early 90′s and across the street was the ‘Top Video’ gate that TRACY168 did – the same one in Spray Can Art book. So as the years went by I would put the pieces to the puzzle. I started meeting writers and learned my graffiti history. I didn’t start actually writing until 2001, when some friends where doing a mural in the Bronx and asked me to help to do the easy stuff – filling in some characters. By then I had developed my INDIE tag name and just started getting into more and more. But the most significant turning point was meeting COPE2, he put me down my first production wall and the rest is history….
“Basically I’m just being myself, doing what makes ME happy and if people like what I do then that’s a bonus”.
Civil:How do you feel about being a girl in the graff scene…do you feel you get the respect you deserve?
Indie:Being a female writer can be a double edged sword. Sometimes people may question my skills as a writer and at the same time give me attention just because I’m a girl doing graffiti. Getting respect from my peers is something I have to earn not just get it over night because of my gender. To me that’s been the most challenging because all my life I’ve always felt like a black sheep, never really fitting in. I’m not trying to get an award just because I’m a graff girl and most importantly – I’m not trying to be the best writer out there. Basically I’m just being myself, doing what makes ME happy and if people like what I do then that’s a bonus.
Civil: That’s what’s up…What type of style do you prefer..Los Angeles or New York?
Indie:Definitely, NY Style all the way. I love when simple letters stand out amongst it all…all the wildstyles, burners, throw ups, tags you name it. Simple letters are sexy! Gotta love that SEEN, WEST, SERVE, JONONE AND DELTA style. Even love simple throw ups such as JA, LOUIE167, PEN and SHINE….

Civil: From what I have seen it looks like you go bombing a lot… Is there a crazy short story we should know about from your bombing experiences?
Indie:No crazy stories here…I can’t afford to bomb in my homeland. I’m a good girl…but most important a mother first, I can’t afford to get locked up and not take my kid to school. Maybe when I go abroad..I do a bit here and there
