Guillaume Nery, “Free Fall”

Posted in Film, Sports on June 30th, 2010 by J. Duaine Hahn

A video has been circulating recently featuring Guillaume Nery, a world champion freediver, performing a unique dive into Dean’s Blue Hole; the deepest under water sink hole of it’s sort on the planet. It plunges 202 meters deep into a bay west of Clarence Town on Long Island, Bahamas. Nery was filmed  by fellow French champion-diver Julie Gautier for a few consecutive days in order to capture the films breath-taking images. It is originally intended by the two divers to be a work of “fiction,” as the film gives the impression that Nery reaches the bottom of the sinkhole, though he never truly did. Nery has said he wished to use the film as a means of showing what freediving is, and the complexity of the sport.

It is a beautiful film regardless, and captures the raw thrill of free-diving for the many people who have yet to witness the sport.

“Suzanna Garland, president of the Humanists and Freethinkers of the Cape Fear, this morning to take photos of the new Godless billboard across the road from the Harris Teeter on Carolina Beach Road, just past Monkey Junction – on the way to the beach. She said her group which co-sponsored the billboard with the NC Secular Association has been getting some interesting feedback emails from the community.”-Star news

Kanye West, Lyrical Thief?

Multi-platnium hip hop artist Kanye West catches yet another case. While in the midst of a pending case with rap mogul Suge Knight, West is also being sued for stealing the lyrics to one of the biggest songs of his career. Virginia rapper Vincent “Vince P.” Perters claims Kanye took lyrics he wrote and used them for his 2007 hit “Stronger”.

The suit states West’s song “copies significant and important parts of Vince P’s lyrics identically or almost identically.” Peters claims he sent a copy of his version of the song to Kanye’s manager John Monopoly, hoping he would be the executive producer for his project. Peters case is based on similar lyrics in both songs which include a reference to Kate Moss, ““that which does not kill me makes me stronger,” “can’t wait much longer,” and the use of the word “wronger.” The pending suit demands that Kanye and his label are to pay an undisclosed amount of money, prohibited from selling, performing, or distribuiting the allegedly copyrighted song, and all the copies of the song are to be destroyed.
