Freestyle Session isn’t the same as it used to be but the bboys continue to evolve showing a more well- rounded style blended with unique flowing moves. In the late 70s and 80s, there was an emphasis on the raw flavor, foundation, style and execution of moves. While the former is important, the 90s saw an addition of evolution in power moves as well as unique style.

                    In 2000, and the era that I grew up with, there was a great change that saw a definite break in style, where there was an exploration of moves that relied heavily on balance, as the dance began to evaluate its identity choosing to borrow more heavily from Cirque moves, punk and goth style. In this era, there were more specialists of the dance. You would have someone that specializes in footwork, foundation, character, power moves, freezes, and few that would combine all of the above.

 In this decade from 2010, I feel that the bboys are definitely more well rounded, although the striking individuality is not as prevalent.

Congrats to Jinjo Crew for taking it…this time Korean bboys get their well deserved win.

The concept of Based on Crew Story deals with the concept and principle of sticking to the crew you originality started of with. In recent times, many bboys will combine and establish supercrews of gifted bboys just to win battles instead of sticking to their original crew. Like many of the bboys stated, a crew is a like family of individuals who share common goals and philosophies in the dance. Based on a crew story, served to pay homage to the crews that still stayed true to their original crews, whether it was struggling through battles, learning the principles of the dance and life.

Civil represents a collective conscious mind which celebrates the difference of the bboys who put in the work learning moves from scratch and representing themselves. Many of us were bboys, who paid dues, now Civil is showing love and support for the next generation of dancers, as well as everyone who represents the art of bboying.

I will give this battle a 3.5 out of 5 stars. It started great… then had a slow point, but picked up and became exciting again. Dope bboys…props to both crews.

Highlights

1:45-  This is the point in the clip where the battle takes its turn from decent to..WOW!

-Starts with a cool power set, ending in a freeze on beat.

-Followed  by an air twist landing directly on his back….Intensity of the battle just went up about 6 notches! The dude takes his shirt off…..okay. Then does his set; which is cool but a lil sloppy cause he’s probably too pumped.

-Immediately followed by one of my favorite bboys in this battle…dude in the purple (don’t know his name) but he does a head slide to a flip clean as f**k.  Followed by a dope set on beat.

Skip 3:25- This guy slows the tempo of the battle.No offense.

4:00-Ups on beat to a nice inward hand glide.(Probably want to watch this part if you don’t watch bboying a lot…you will probably be amazed by this crowed pleas-er.)

Do not skip-pretty much the rest of the battle is dope. Especially the routine.

0:44- Bens flip to start the battle.

3:35-Lil Rock clowning their routine.

4:00-This routine is new to me…I’ve never seen this one until this battle. Dope!

5:03-Lil Rocks set. Nice.

8:00-Another routine…ending with Crumbs doing his  signiture front hand spring thingy off of the shoulders.
