Posted in Culture, Food, Life, People, Places on August 19th, 2010 by CVLA

Miami is the land of melting pot of ethnic backgrounds. Miami music is varied. Cubans brought the conga and rumba to Miami from their homelands instantly popularizing it in American culture. Dominicans brought bachata, and merengue, while Colombians brought vallenato and cumbia. West Indians and Caribbean people have brought reggae, soca, kompa, zouk, calypso, and steel pan to the area as well.
In the early 1970s, the Miami disco sound came to life with TK Records, featuring the music of KC and the Sunshine Band, with such hits as “Get Down Tonight”, “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty” and “That’s the Way (I Like It)”; and the Latin-American disco group, Foxy (band), with their hit singles “Get Off” and “Hot Number”. Miami-area natives George McCrae and Teri DeSario were also popular music artists during the 1970s disco era. The Bee Gees moved to Miami in 1975 and have lived here ever since then. Miami-influenced, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine, hit the popular music scene with their Cuban-oriented sound and had huge hits in the 1980s with “Conga” and “Bad Boys”.

On our way to South Beach…. The Party town with Samba, Congo, and the sun-shine beach……

Miami is also considered a “hot spot” for dance music, Freestyle, a style of dance music popular in the 80′s and 90′s heavily influenced by Electro, hip-hop, and disco. Many popular Freestyle acts such as Pretty Tony, Debbie Deb, Stevie B, and Exposé, originated in Miami. Indie/folk acts Cat Power and Iron & Wine are based in the city,[43] while alternative hip hop artist Sage Francis, electro artist Uffie, and the electroclash duo Avenue D were born in Miami, but musically based elsewhere. Also, punk band Against All Authority is from Miami, and rock/metal bands Nonpoint and Marilyn Manson each formed in neighboring Fort Lauderdale. Popular Cuban American female recording artist, Ana Cristina, was born in Miami in 1985, and became the first Hispanic person in history to perform the “Star Spangled Banner” at a presidential inauguration.

Reduce Greenhouse Gases – Save our planet – EAT INSECTS!!!

Posted in Culture, Food on August 3rd, 2010 by CVLA

The world is having difficulty feeding itself. More than a sixth of the world’s population are considered malnourished, and with the global population expected to rise to around nine billion by 2050, agricultural production will need to increase by 70 percent to keep everyone fed.

More meat means an increase in methane causing greenhouse affect.

By reducing our consumption of meat we help save the planet….

Insects are a good source of protein. It is being consumed in many countries. Not only are insects an excellent source of protein, vitamins, and minerals, but farming them is also much more sustainable when compared to traditional livestock like cows or pigs. Farming and breeding insects creates 10 times less methane and 300 times less nitrous oxide. Currently, traditional livestock produce around 20% of greenhouse gasses, which are a contributing factor to global warming. Save the Planet, have an Insect for Lunch and get the protein you need… The advantages of this diet include insects’ high levels of protein, vitamin and mineral content. Van Huis’s latest research, conducted with colleague Dennis Oonincx, shows that farming insects produces far less greenhouse gas than livestock. Breeding commonly eaten insects such as locusts, crickets and meal worms, emits 10 times less methane than livestock. The insects also produce 300 times less nitrous oxide, also a warming gas, and much less ammonia, a pollutant produced by pig and poultry farming. More healthy insects with protein and minerals to chose from.. And you maybe able to find some and catch it in your backyard… Bon Appetit, Save the Planet, and enjoy your meal…….

Posted in All, Art, Culture, Events, Film, Food, Hip-Hop, People, Photography on June 9th, 2010 by Bear

Finally had a chance to try Honey’s Kettle with the homies, Larry ( DJ Predakon) and Arash ( DJ Shammy Dee). I’ve been dying to try one of the best fried chicken spots on earth, this place puts all other fried chicken spots to shame. Don’t even think about comparing this spot to KFC or Popeye’s, it is beyond sacrilegious. Oh yeah, one more thing get the biscuits, they are so heavenly, light and divine, it melts in your mouth smoother than butter sauteed lobster.

Larry is on is way to tour in Taiwan for a month, and Arash just got back from Texas, and worked with Talib Kweli, you can also catch him in the Gamespot commerical. Its good to see friends doing their thing.

Strawberry Harvest Day Begins – The Myth

Posted in Culture, Events, Food, Life on June 9th, 2010 by CVLA

The Harvest season of Strawberries have started in the German area of Lower Saxony. These early strawberries are grown under foil. From next week onwards strawberries from uncovered growing areas are expected. The season will run till the end of September. Look at the strawberry’s form. Heart-shaped, covered in seeds, green spiky top. By now most of you have probably figured this out: the strawberry is supposed to inspire lust. Strawberries have special meaning in the northeastern United States. Because strawberries are the first fruit of the year to ripen, they are associated with spring and rebirth. The Seneca also say that strawberries grow along the path to the heavens and that they can bring good health.
A Cherokee Strawberry Legend
Touched by the man’s anguish, the Great Spirit intervened. Seeing the way First Woman was walking he began to make plants grow at her feet to slow her down. To one side grew the blackberries and to the other grew huckleberries, but still she walked on. Again he made the plants grow and to one side grew the gooseberries and to the other grew the service berries, but still she walked on. The Creator knew that this would have to slow her down and so he went to his garden and grabbed a handful of strawberry plants and threw them to the Earth. When they landed at First Woman’s feet they began to bloom and ripen, First Woman looked down to see the beautiful leaves and berries of the strawberry plant and stopped to taste just one small berry. As she plucked and ate the berries she forgot her anger. Finding a basket among her belongings, she quickly filled it, and longed for her husband once more. First Man, hurrying on his way, was surprised to see his wife returning, and oh! how his heart did soar. She was smiling! She dipped her hand into her basket, and got a berry and placed it in his mouth. He smiled foolishly, and gave thanks to the Creator. Taking his hand, his wife led him back down the path to their home, feeding him strawberries on the way.. Strawberry are scientifically proven aphrodisiac foods for great sex life. These foods are not only stimulating for your hormones, they are healthy as well. All of these foods have a sensuous history, seductive shape and are nutritious to the core.
