Who was St. Patrick anyway…!?

Posted in All, Culture, Events, Life, People, Uncategorized on March 17th, 2010 by Michael

Like many other people I sometimes celebrate holidays for an excuse to get drunk or get a day off. Most people like myself don’t know the history behind the holiday they’re celebrating. I admit that today I had a dew friends call me and ask what were doing tonight in a festive attitude. It got me thinking…Who was St. Patrick anyway??… Here’s a few facts you can share while downing that green beer with your friends.

Why do we celebrate St. Patricks day?

“St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast—on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.” -History.com

Facts about St. Patrick.

“The real St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish. He was born in Britain around A.D. 390 to an aristocratic Christian family with a townhouse, a country villa, and plenty of slaves. What’s more, Patrick professed no interest in Christianity as a young boy, Freeman noted. At 16, Patrick’s world turned. He was kidnapped and sent overseas to tend sheep as a slave in the chilly, mountainous countryside of Ireland for seven years.”-news.nationalgeographic.com

Why do you have to wear green you ask..!?!?

-Cause you’ll get pinched at school. Duhhhh! And, this too of course:”The colors of the Republic of Ireland are a tricolor of green, white, and orange. The orange supposedly represents the Protestant population, the green the Catholic, and the white the peace between them.”-History.com

The Ulysses Guide to the LA River, VOL. I

Posted in Art, Culture, Life, Photography, Places on March 13th, 2010 by J. Duaine

I was pointed to an interesting book by one of my main dudes, Paul Breckow, and from this I’m here to pass on what I think is an unmatched look into one of the most uncelebrated extensions of the city of Los Angeles. This book, The Ulysses Guide to the LA River VOL. I, is the beginning of an in depth perspective of the Los Angeles River, offering a close inspection of the hidden life and culture that thrives within the influence of the city and river. The first chapters begin by embracing the nature that exists within the confines of the river’s concrete walls. If you’ve seen the LA river for yourself, it is well known that this is not an ordinary river by any means. It is unique in that it is not founded on a natural setting, but is instead shaped by man’s own hand. In a city overruled by tall buildings and advanced architecture, it may seem that a concrete river running through the heart of the city would only be a hindrance, yet the people behind Ulysses use art, photographs and stories to depict a world that only a native eye could uncover- with displaying these perspectives, they allow everyone the chance to experience what it is to be an Angelino by viewing the Los Angeles River through these native eyes, doing the city a much deserved justice.

Hit up the site and pick up the guide, and check out art exhibition February 14 – May 30, 2010 @ the Pasadena Museum of California Art- www.pmcaonline.org

you won’t regret taking the ride.

ATL billboard drama

Posted in Culture, Life on February 26th, 2010 by J. Duaine

so there has been rumblings in Atlanta about a billboard that has been displayed showing the picture of an African-American baby next to the words, “Black children are an endangered species.” it is in clear opposition to abortion, and is as blunt as you can get. question is, was it smart for the group behind this billboard to bring such a strong sentiment to this issue as to call out race? this is where the controversy has been brewing. Atlanta’s population consists of a majority of African-Americans, and this billboard only expresses concern for this single ethnic group. this is exactly the issue that has been brought up against whites for decades. whites have always owned the majority of the population within the country; because of minority suppression, the days of Jim Crow laws and civil rights, the efforts to increase minority rights were born to oppose such actions as this one. this sign is the same blueprint used against minority’s for decades, and because African-Americans are the majority there, this can be looked at negatively. I think it is a justified perception, even though it is not necessarily right.

controversy makes the airwaves, so though they are a majority in Atlanta, they are still a minority in the country. this billboard was created to inflict outrage, and as a result, it has reached countless other people across the country who may have got the message. personally, I think the best way they could have displayed the billboard was to have the same baby with the message “An endangered species,” without the specific race identified. if you are against abortion, it has to be abortion from all races, unless you do consider yourself racist cause that’s exactly where that’s headed. putting African-Americans, or other minorities, on the forefronts of media without mentioning race is a positive effect that will assist in diminishing the stigma of seeing a minority on a billboard without an ulterior motive.
