Jamie Scoles, 22, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, independent drummer formerly from the band Nylon Pink.
How do you celebrate the difference?
Music is so extremely powerful. It creates an atmosphere in which I can connect with everyone. I do it because it gives me the ultimate freedom. The freedom to create, to express myself and it continually inspires me to keep growing as a person and as a musician.
How did you first get into music? When did you know you wanted to pursue music professionally?
I’ve been into music since I can even remember. All of the videos from my childhood were of me dancing and playing the air guitar every time music comes on or me on the kitchen floor pulling out all the pots and pans and banging on them with chopsticks… and then getting in trouble for it haha. I was a choir and drumline kid through school but I first picked up the drums when I was 10 years old. My sister wanted a drum set really bad and my dad ended up getting her one but she got over it after a few months or so but once I got on the seat, I’ve been coming back and playing the drums since. Around 5th grade was when Blink 182 had gotten really popular and after watching all their DVDs and memorizing all their music, I knew that I wanted to be just like them and do what they do.
If you had’t pursued music, what other profession would you see yourself in?
If I hadn’t pursued music, I would probably be taking on graphic design or videography as a career. My major in college was actually Graphic Design at FIDM so I design all my own stuff and I even shoot and edit all my own videos as well. I would absolutely love to get deeper into them in the near future.
What has been one of your favorite moments performing thus far?
I have a good handful of favorite moments performing but if I had to really break it down and choose, it would probably have to be playing San Francisco pride. Looking out from my drums was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. It was just a wave of millions of people and it was just good vibes all around. The feeling when you just really vibe with the fans is the best feeling because you are just feeding off of each others energy and it takes a performance to a whole new level.
Who are some of your personal musical inspirations/idols?
Travis Barker has been one of my biggest musical inspirations since I can remember. He was actually the reason why I chose the career path of being a drummer and being in music. His drumming style is unique and everything that he does is always unique. Him being so different from any other drummer and any other artist is what inspires me the most.
When you aren’t kicking ass on the drums, what do you like to do in your free time?
I spend a lot of time with my family. My cousins are always coming over to my house just to hang out, I take my motorcycle out and go riding with my sister, or I go give my parents a visit. We are an active family so we usually go jet skiing, wakeboarding, snowboarding, dirt biking, etc. If I’m not doing that, I’m out exploring the world with my camera shooting anything and everything!
What message do you try to convey and hope fans get through your music?
The message that I try to convey is that absolutely anyone can do anything they want if they set their mind to it. Me being an Asian-American female drummer is not something you see every day but it has never held me back from doing my thing and being who and what I want to be. My new project will really bring that message out.
You were also previously nominated for Pop Artist of the Year by the LA Music Awards? (Congrats by the way!)
The funny thing is, I didn’t even know until I was in the car with my band mates and one of them was like oh the LA Music Awards is on this day by the way and I was like “What is that for? What are we doing for it?” and then she mentioned that we were nominated for Pop Artist of the Year and I was like “WHAT?! NO WAY! THAT’S AWESOME!” So it was kinda just dropped on me out of the blue.
What was going through your head when you found out you had been nominated?
I would have to say that I had a little proud moment. I kinda just took a glimpse back at my life on how I started and how much I’ve been through to get to where I am now and how far I’ve gotten. That’s when I realized that I’m on the right path and I can’t stop now!
What does the future hold for you? Any upcoming projects, performances or events?
I am actually working on my own solo project now. Many get confused by this, but basically it means something completely brand new to the music scene is coming! I’m working hard behind the scenes to push this project out as soon as possible and I’m really excited for it! In fact, this is the first time I’m even mentioning it publicly.
