After over a decade of paying dues dancing and traveling, Moy Rivas is no stranger to the struggle all artists and dancers face striving to make their dreams become reality. Known originally for his role in Havik/KORO, as one of the crew’s brightest talents, Moy has carved his own identity since his migration to LA in recent years on the always impressive Killafornia and Footwork Fanatics crew. In Bboying’s mid school era Havik/KORO rose to fame from obscurity after a first round victory over one of this decade’s most inspirational crews, Style Elements fairing so well as to reach the finals. Stay tuned as the Civil crew picks the brain of one of the world’s most skilled, humble and well rounded dancers of this era.

CIVIL: What’s up Moy! How are you today?

Moy: Good! Chillin, just got back from NY!

CIVIL: So for everyone out there please how did you get started bboying?

Moy: I got started by watching a middle school talent show. Some of my really good friends were performing and I had no idea they could do that. I was trippin, mostly because i hung out with them all the time and they never told me anything, lol. I also knew a lot about it because my older bro used to break in the 80′s. So I was ready!

Moy of Footwork Fanatics Solo: Never Be Bored.

CIVIL: Tell us how Havik/Koro got started?

Moy: Havik/KORO started as 2 seperate crews. Havik, which was started by my boy Maya and I in 96, and KORO was around since the early 90s but was mostly a House/Hip Hop Crew. We would always end up against each other in different battles, sometimes KORO would win and sometimes Havik would win. That went on for like 3 years or so, until we just sat down one day and was like…”lets just put a crazy squad together and try and save up some money to go to Freestyle Session 99.” So we went to LA, and first battle was against the best crews in the world, Style Elements and Footwork Fanatix. We were mad nervous, but they called us up, and that went down in History. We won, surprisingly! So thats the first time we entered as HAVIKORO.

CIVIL: Who are some inspirations for you inside and outside of the dance?

Moy: My wife, Roxanne and my family are my biggest inspirations, because I want to work as hard as I can to make them happy. Everything that i do, is for them. As far as bboying, I was really inspired by Ken Swift, Flo Master, Storm, Crazy Leggs, Easy Roc, Bboy Ivan, Style Elements, my crew and way more to name.

CIVIL: You just got back from NY, how was that experience and how does the scene differ from Cali?

Moy:I was in NY rehearsing for a movie, Step Up 3D. I didn’t get to experience any jams, but I been out there plenty of times. NY is where it all started, so of course it carries that raw and original vibe. I love it! Bboys and Bgirls are mad aggressive and really love to battle. That’s what makes NY so exciting, because I think everytime that I been there, I always battle.

CIVIL: In Freestyle Session 5, Havik/Koro seemed to come out of nowhere to win the competition, and it was the first time I saw someone do 6 continous Airflares, how does your perspective as a bboy and a person differ from then and now?

Moy: As a person, that was just an amazing experience and am happy that people will get to see that day for a long time because of videos, dvds, youtube, etc…because it can be an eye opener for peeps who come from areas where they feel like they arent able to get out and show what they got, but that moment is a great example that you anyone is capable of making something happen. (although I didn’t go for that intention, I just wanted to dance, THANK GOD, I was able to inspire). As a bboy, I look back and it trips me out how young I was and i think to myself, “wow, I had nothing.” LOL. I have traveled all over and everyone have always told me how good i was then and they have been inspired by me. So that wows me because I just saw myself, like everyone else did…a Powermover. But that’s not what I wanted to be. I wanted to be a BBOY, complete with all around style and power. So ever since, that has been my main focus! Don’t let the footwork fool you, I still do power! haha!

The historic moment at 4:36 when Moy kills it with 6 airflares!!

“Because it can be an eye opener for people who come from areas where they feel like they aren’t able to get out and show what they got, but that moment is a great example that you anyone is capable of making something happen.”

CIVIL: Why did you move to Cali from Texas, and how have things changed since then?

Moy: I moved because I really wanted to keep doing what I do and pay my bills doing it. So to try and make something big out of it, you have to be in LA. Since I been here, things have been great. I been able to work a lot and be part of major projects such as movies, commercials, TV shows and Theatre Shows with the GROOVALOOS. Also, still reppin hard at Bboy Jams and Im a member of FOOTWORK FANATIX and KILLAFORNIA. (No Longer HAVIKORO).
